While screening removes large contaminants, clarification and flotation remove heavy and light suspended solids respectively. This class of equipment belongs to the physio-chemical processes because they use physical removal means and are often combined with the addition of chemicals that flocculate or coagulate the suspended solids to allow for better removal.

These systems must be optimized to operate at the lowest cost possible but at the highest level of efficiency. They can also be used as a pre-treatment to reduce sewer discharge costs.
